Keeping Calm The Night Before Your Nuptials

All of your laborious days of wedding planning are passing by at what feels like the speed of light and before you know it, it’s the night before your nuptials!!

Ohhh Emmm Geeee – you feel like you could spontaneously combust at any moment – you’re just soooo darn EXCITED!

Well, here’s five little tips on how you can keep calm and get a good nights sleep the night before your wedding day…

5. Step Away From The Shots!

DO NOT we repeat DO NOT get drunk – sure, you might thing a little tipple is going to steady your nerves and switch you off.. But actually, you’ll be more likely to get more agitated by having a drink – plus, you won’t get a decent night sleep!

Here’s what the Drink Aware Website states:

‘Even a couple of drinks can interfere with the normal sleep process. When you drink alcohol close to bedtime, you can go straight into deep sleep, missing out on the usual first stage of sleep, called rapid eye movement (REM) sleep.

“Deep sleep is when the body restores itself, and alcohol can interfere with this,” explains Dr John Shneerson, head of the sleep centre at Papworth Hospital in Cambridge. “As the alcohol starts to wear off, your body can come out of deep sleep and back into REM sleep, which is much easier to wake from. That’s why you often wake up after just a few hours sleep when you’ve been drinking.”

In the course of a night you usually have six to seven cycles of REM sleep, which leaves you feeling refreshed. However, if you’ve been drinking you’ll typically have only one to two, meaning you can wake feeling exhausted.’

‘When you drink more than usual, you may have to get up in the night to go to the toilet. And it’s not just the liquid you’ve drunk that you’ll be getting rid of. Alcohol is a diuretic, which means it encourages the body to lose extra fluid though sweat too, making you dehydrated.’

So, all in all alcohol can equal a fitful night’s sleep. Not what you need the night before the big day!!

4. Have a Good Soak in the Tub

But don’t leave it too close to bedtime! Studies show that a relaxing warm bath will send you off to sleep, but the timing is crucial. Being overheated or sweating can actually make it difficult to sleep. So make sure you give your body the chance to cool down before you head off to bed…

3. Use a Sleep Mist

Trust me on this one ladies! Use a little spritz of this on your pillow every night in the run up to the big day… that way you’ll associate the smell with going to sleep. You’ll be nodding off in no time at all… Get your sleep mist on offer here.

2. Be With Those Who Will Keep You Chilled…

I purposefully chose to be with my Mum and little sister the night before my wedding, as I knew I would just be too distracted and excited if I was with my besties! We would have been up all night nattering away.

1.Stay OFF Your Phone!!

Studies have proven that using your phone can have major ramifications on your quality of sleep…

‘Essentially, by staring into our screens just before bed, we’re actually soaking up a “stream of photons” – which tell our brains that we want to stay awake. Helpful.

When it’s time for sleep, our brains naturally secrete melatonin, which allows us to switch off, but consuming all this digital information prevents us from doing so. So that’s probably why you’ve found yourself tossing and turning for an hour or so before you can actually switch off at night.

But the damage, unfortunately, isn’t just tiredness the following day caused by a later bedtime. By staying awake, we don’t allow those precious neurons of ours to rest, and we also prevent the supportive ‘glial’ cells from cleaning up the toxins that our neurons have emitted throughout the day.’

So there you have it ladies – good luck with keeping calm before your wedding!!

If all else fails, just make sure you stock up on plenty of concealer and some eye brightening eye drops… you want to look your best in all of your wedding photos!
